What Is An AED?

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is the only way to re-start the heart for most victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest!
  • CPR is required to keep oxygen circulating to vital organs, including the heart and brain, so that an AED will be able to work.
  • There are MANY models of AEDs, but they all work the same way - just turn it on, and follow the instructions
  • AEDs rapidly analyze the heart's electrical rhythm to determine if a shock is needed
  • AEDs are very safe - they will never shock someone who does not need it
  • AEDs are easy to use with audible (and sometimes visual) prompts to walk you through the process. You do not even have to be trained or certified to use an AED!
Why are AEDs so important?
  • We know that for every minute of SCA that passes without an AED, survival decreases by 10%!
Where should AEDs be located?
  • EVERYWHERE that people gather should have AEDs
    • ​Schools, shopping centers, offices, playing fields, theaters, parks, etc.
  • They should be placed in highly visible locations
  • There should be a minimum of one AED per floor in most buildings
  • AEDs should be placed so that you are able to get to an AED and back in less than 3 minutes
